Título: Unruh effect, Hawking radiation and black holes' thermodynamics

Prof. Roman Konoplya
Prof. Visitante - Universidade Federal do ABC

Resumo: The Unruh effect is a prediction that the accelerating observer in vacuum will detect black-body radiation, that is, an accelerated thermometer will detect non-zero temperature in empty space. This effect can be applied to a black hole: acceleration at its event horizon will provide a surface temperature, what implies a thermal (Hawking) radiation of the black hole. A simplified derivation of the Unruh effect, intensity of Hawking radiation, and discussion of laws of thermodynamics for black holes will be given at the undergraduate level. Thus, only basic knowledge of Special Relativity and General Physics are implied.

Título: A Descoberta do Bóson de Higgs

Prof. Eduardo Gregores
Universidade Federal do ABC

Prof. Klaus Werner CapelleUniversidade Federal do ABC

Spin Chains and Quantum Information Transfer

Irene D´Amico, York University, UK

Resumo: Quantum states of light are widely regarded as the vehicle of choice for quantum communication over large distances, however there has been much recent interest in the potential use of spin chains for quantum communication over much shorter distances. When the task at hand is for example communication between adjacent processors or registers, it may well be that a chain of spins can play an effective and useful role. Here the term “spin chain” applies to any set of two-state quantum systems coupled to their nearest neighbours. A chain could literally comprise spins or magnetic moments, such as with a string of fullerenes or magnetic particles or nuclear spins in a molecule. But it could also describe a system of electrons or excitons in a chain of interacting quantum dots, or other devices. In this talk I will report on our recent work on the use of spin chains for quantum communication and generation of entanglement.

NO$\nu$A: $\theta_{13}$ is large, so now what?

Jonathan Paley, Argonne National Laboratory, USA

Resumo: The recent discovery of a non-zero value of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ is excellent news for the NuMI Off-Axis $\nu_e$ Appearance (NO$\nu$A) long baseline experiment.  NO$\nu$A, currently under construction and set to begin collecting data in the spring of 2013, has unique sensitivity to the neutrino mass-hierarchy, the CP-violating neutrino mixing phase, and the octant of the $\theta_{23}$ mixing angle.  I review here the design of the detectors and beam, the physics sensitivities with the latest knowledge of $\theta_{13}$, and the schedule of the NO$\nu$A experiment.

Palestrante: Eduardo Mucciolo, University of Central Florida, USA

NO$\nu$A: $\theta_{13}$ is large, so now what?: Neste seminário eu apresentarei a nossa proposta [1] de computação clássica paralela usando estados de muitos corpos codificados na forma de produtos matriciais.

Particle Acceleration in Turbulence and Weakly Stochastic Reconnection

Palestrante:  Grzegorz Kowal (IAG - USP)

Resumo: The magnetic fields can change their topology through a process known as magnetic reconnection. This process in not only important for understanding the origin and evolution of the large-scale magnetic field, but is seen as a possibly efficient particle accelerator producing cosmic rays mainly through the first order Fermi process. In my seminar I will present our work on understanding the properties of particle acceleration inserted in reconnection zones and show that the velocity component parallel to the magnetic field of test particles injected in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) domains of reconnection without including kinetic effects, such as pressure anisotropy, the Hall term, or anomalous effects, increases exponentially. Also, the acceleration of the perpendicular component is always possible in such models. Within contracting magnetic islands or current sheets the particles accelerate predominantly through the first order Fermi process, as previously described, while outside the current sheets and islands the particles experience mostly drift acceleration due to magnetic fields gradients. The importance of inclusion of a guide field or performing fully three dimensional studies for a complete understanding of the process of particle acceleration in astrophysical reconnection environments is demonstrated as well.

Mesoscopic Quantum Optics of Nanocavity Quantum-Dot Systems

Palestrante: Boris Anghelo Rodríguez Rey (Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia)

Microcavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED), the interplay between quantum optics and solid state systems, has recently emerged as one of  the most active and promising research fields. A single quantum emitter, a Qdot or a Qwell, coupled to one confined light mode in a photonic crystal or a micropillar-cavity is one of these CQED systems with more perspectives for device applications such as single photon sources and quantum information processing. Furthermore, this system exhibits fundamental physical phenomena such as weak and strong coupling, Purcell effect, non-classical light, and polariton laser (non-equilibrium BEC). In this talk we will give a short review on the subject. Also, we shall show recent results obtained in our group about i) the theory of polariton bath (master equation) and ii) the different quantum phases arising in a microcavity-quantum dot system.
